Bleaching: How It Works

Blonde hair always attracts attention, and many women dream of having a beautiful blonde mane. In bleaching, the hair is not dyed but lightened by removing the natural color pigments (melanin) from the hair using hydrogen peroxide. It is important to pay attention to your natural hair color and to use the carefully chosen product exactly as instructed. If you follow the processing time precisely, you can avoid the dreaded “color accidents,” such as unwanted yellow tones.

Step 1: Buying the Bleach

Those who don’t pay attention to quality when buying bleach risk drying out and damaging their hair. High-quality lightening products are available, for example, from Schwarzkopf BlondMeGoldwell LightenersWella Blondor, or L’Oréal Professionnel Blond Studio. You will always need a bleaching powder or cream and a developer to mix with it.

Step 2: Mixing the Bleach

Depending on how many levels you want to lighten, choose a developer with a suitable strength. The mixing ratio depends on the products used. For example, Schwarzkopf BlondMe Bleach is always mixed in a 1:1 ratio with the developer.

Step 3: Applying the Bleach

The color cream should be applied to the hair immediately after mixing. Bleach should never be applied to wet hair, only to dry hair. To achieve the best lightening result, apply the product in fine sections. Always start with the lengths and ends, and apply to the roots last.

Step 4: Processing the Bleach

The processing time for bleach is usually between 30 and 45 minutes. The exact time the product should remain in the hair can be found in the instruction leaflet.

Step 5: Rinsing Out the Bleach

After the processing time has ended, rinse thoroughly. It is best to rinse with cool water, as this is gentler on both the scalp and the hair.

We’ve tested them and present to you top products from Schwarzkopf, Wella, L’Oréal, Sassoon, and Goldwell. Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Time Should Be Between Bleachings?

You should wait six to eight weeks between individual bleaching sessions.

Which Bleach Is the Gentlest?

Nowadays, almost all professional salon brands use formulations and technologies in their bleaches to make them gentler. Examples include the Bonding Technology in Schwarzkopf BlondMe. Another particularly gentle option is Olaplex.

Are Bleaches Really That Damaging?

Bleaches destroy the natural color pigments in the hair, which can always put stress on it. How damaging it is depends on the quality of the products, the strength of the hair structure, and the frequency of bleaching. In any case, hair should only be bleached by professional stylists, and proper follow-up care is essential. This helps keep hair damage to a minimum.
